The story about Shushi and the people of Shushi

The war unleashed by Azerbaijan in 2020 actually stopped with the fall of Shushi.

Having captured Shushi, the Azerbaijanis set out to destroy the Armenian heritage of the city, both by forgery and physically.


The building, located at 72 Ghazanchetsot Street, right in front of the church, was one of the buildings destroyed by the Azerbaijanis. The former residents of the building present the Shushi they know through their stories.

Mariam Andreasyan lived in Shushi and was engaged in cultural and social activities. During the war she moved to Gyumri, then to Yerevan. A year after the war, Mariam Andreasyan, having found strength in herself, moved to Stepanakert.

She teaches national dances, continues social activities. With this, she brought her part of Shushi to Stepanakert.

Harut Babalyan during the liturgy

Before the war, Harut Babalyan performed spiritual services in the Ghazanchetsots Church. During the war, he volunteered for military service.

After the war, the Babalyan family moved to Stepanakert. Now Harut Babalyan serves in Stepanakert`s Holy Mother of God Cathedral.
Harut got married, his wedding had been postponed because of the war.

Nvard Khachikyan in Yerevan

Nvard Khachikyan was born in Shushi. She worked at the Armenian Coin Museum in Shushi. They took nothing when they left home during the war. Then they saw their home destroyed by rockets from photos published in the press.

The Khachikyan family is now in Yerevan. Although it is hard, they think about homecoming to Artsakh.

Anush Zakaryan with her niece

Anush Zakaryan is a pianist. Before the war, she worked at the Art school of Shushi and taught national song and dance at the school named after Khachatur Abovyan in Shushi.

As a result of the war, the Zakaryan family moved to Yerevan, but their home in Shushi is always in their mind. Anush Zakaryan keeps in touch with Artsakh and continues to teach there.

Satellite imagery shows that the building of the heroes of the stories was destroyed by the Azerbaijanis after the war.

In the upper small rectangle is the building at Ghazanchetsots 72. In its vicinity you can also see the Ghazanchetsots Church, the dome of which is damaged, but still exists. Further to the left, you can see 4 buildings, these are residential buildings at Proshyan 1, 3, 5, 7. They are still visible in this satellite image from February 2020.
A satellite image from August 2021, shows that the building located at Ghazanchetsots 72 was razed to the ground by the Azerbaijanis. Below and to the left, the demolition of 4 residential buildings along Proshyan Street is also visible. In place of one of them, the foundations of a new octagonal building are already visible. Azerbaijanis are building a new mosque there.
